Shinto shrines are religious sites that are dedicated to the KAMI (gods in the Shinto religion). Fushimi Inari-Taisha - Kyoto
Fushimi Inari-Taisha is one of the most recognizable shrines in Japan, perhaps even the world. It is located in Kyoto and is known for its thousands of vermillion torii gates that path through the forested mount inari. This shrine is dedicated to the deity Inari – the god of rice and sake. Fushimi Inari-Taisha is a great place to explore and can be easily reached from Kyoto Station by train.
Meiji Jingu - Tokyo
Meiji Jingu is one of Tokyo’s two grandest shrines. Dedicated to Emperor Meiji and his wife, Empress Shoken, this site is a beautiful example of Japanese culture and art. The shrine is located in Yoyogi Park and visitors will notice the many traditional Japanese buildings, a 1st century iris garden, and two ponds. The grandiose entrance also features two giant torii gates – a great place for photos.
Itsa-Daiduji Temple - Nara
Itsa-Daiduji Temple, located in Nara, is a great place to learn more about Buddhism and its history. This temple was built in the 8th century and has many elaborate sculptures and decorations that represent the 8 lucky gods of Buddhism. The innermost chamber of the temple is especially beautiful and contains some of the best sculptures that represent the gods’ various scenes.
Todaiji Temple - Nara
Todaiji Temple, located in Nara and also known as the Great Eastern Temple, is one of the most prominent temple-shrine complexes in all of Japan. The two most popular features are the giant bronze Buddha and the neighboring Nandaimon gate. Others should check out the Five-Storied Pagoda, which is the second tallest pagoda in Japan, and Kaidan-in Temple, which is the oldest structure in the temple complex.

Hakozaki Shrine - Fukuoka
Hakozaki Shrine, located in Fukuoka, is one of Japan’s National Treasures. This grand complex features a 2-tiered pagoda, two halls, and a serene pond. Prepare yourself for a special treat, because this entire site is illuminated during the evening hours. It’s a great chance to experience a unique atmosphere and take some beautiful night photos.
