Investigating Japan's Education System Japan has long been recognized for its mastery of education, and for good reason. Japan’s impressive scores on international tests, like the Programme for International Student Assessment, or PISA, show that the country is doing something right when it comes to teaching students. To understand just how Japan has achieved such success, it’s worth taking a closer look at the nation’s education system. A typical Japanese school day begins early in the morning and ends in early afternoon. At the elementary level, classes focus heavily on mathematics, science, and language arts. As students reach the junior high level and beyond, they will study additional topics like social studies, physical education, and foreign languages.
