Examining the Traditional Practices of the Geisha
Every culture has its unique practicies and customs, many of which have stood the test of time. The Geisha tradition of Japan is one such example, a unique and intriguing custom with a special place in Japanese culture. But what are the traditional practices of the Geisha, and what interesting stories can it tell?
The word Geisha translates directly to “ entertainer”, and the evolution of the role can be accredited to the pleasure districts of large cities like Tokyo during the Edo Period of the 18th century. Geisha are traditionally female, and the profession requires strict education in various traditional arts including the art of conversation, music, and dance. The most iconic and traditional form of the Geisha remains the same. She will typically dress in a full length kimono, with her hair conservatively styled, and white makeup on her face to give the appearance of a stoic elegance.

The traditional practice of employing Geisha for an evening is perhaps one of the most remarkable parts of the Geisha culture. This practice originates from the period when samurai or rich merchants would hire the Geisha to attend an evening event, the Geisha would be present and ‘liven’ up the occasion by performing classical music and entertaining guests through conversation and games. During the same period, customers would walk around and get to choose a Geisha to spend an evening with, who would then come back to their house and spend the night, getting paid for the time.
This practice is no longer common as it used to be during the Edo Period. Hiring a Geisha for a night out is still valid, but the services associated with it have changed a bit. Instead of spending the night, in the event the Geisha is hired to accompany somebody on the evening, the role of the Geisha is more of a pleasant companion who will never be anything more than that.
Today, it is still possible to experience a traditional geisha performance. The Geiko of Kyoto are the keepers of the traditional practice and every year they hold many events that allow people to observe the traditional songs and dances, as well as get a chance to interact with the Geishas and ask them about their lives and experience.
The iconic Geisha of Japan has become synonymous with the image of Japan abroad and represents a unique part of the culture which has managed to stay relevant throughout history. The traditional practices of the Geisha still exist and offer a unique experience to admire and a special part of culture to experience.
